Prologue:
Ba-Talga shifted through the night, breathing heavily. He was a thirteen year old boy, named after the village god. Ba-Talga had never believed in the existence of Talga, though he worshiped him along with every other member of the small town in the Blurch. He had thought it was all mere ritual and tradition that led them to sacrifice prime feldnr stock every first day of every month, that was until he had denied the existence of Talga. Now he was running for his life.
He dodged around a bush, then tripped over a rock into a reeking puddle. His eyes bulged open from the pain that erupted from his right knee.
"Deny my existence will you..."
He heard the voice, but it seemed to be coming from somewhere within himself. The voice belonged to someone who was powerful, it boomed moistly through his mind.
"I'll show you to test my might."
Ba-Talga whimpered in the puddle, face down, unwilling... unable to face his pursuer. The village's primitive artwork and stone idols depicted Talga as a fearsome beast with many stumpy limbs and a predominant belly. Thinking about that belly, that jiggly belly froze Ba-Talga to his very bones. Ba-Talga felt a massive presence near him, though his eyes were closed in the murk. There was something, something huge and oppressive in the puddle with him. Suddenly, something cold brushed over his foot sending shivers through his whole body.
"A boy. I've eaten young humans before, what made me think I wouldn't eat you?"
"It was the monk!" Ba-Talga screamed, finding his voice. "The monk came through here and planted the seeds of doubt! Forgive me your Blemminence, forgive me oh Massive One."
"The monk!" The voice hissed. It was a sound both terrible and spiteful. "How dare he meddle."
"Forgive me Gracious One," Ba-Talga closed his eyes tighter and clenched his fists. "I believe, I believe!"
The presence was now totally fixated on him. There was silence for several moments and Ba-Talga heard a smacking sound like that of a wet tongue across moist lips. Finally it spoke again, "I am not without mercy."
Ba-Talga's breaths quickened hopefully.
